New Developments in Signaling Theory. Model Building, Applications, and Empirical Corroborations

The Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences (D-GESS) is one of the 16 Departments of the ETH Zurich and has existed in its current form since 1999. It came into existence through the amalgamation of the Department of Social Sciences (D-HUWI), the Department of Law and Economics (D-REOK) and the former Department XI of Military Science, and was further expanded to incorporate Political Sciences. This restructuring process also brought a shift in focus. Until the mid-nineties, the Professors were mainly responsible for the programme of elective subjects; today, D-GESS professorships are dynamic research and teaching posts covering three areas (Governance, the History and Philosophy of Knowledge, and Behavioral Studies) and guaranteeing the very highest standards of both research and teaching. The Department employs a total of 23 professors, over 60 doctoral students, around 180 research assistants, and 130 other staff with mainly administrative and ancillary duties.
The Department is responsible for the compulsory elective courses of D-GESS: every year, between 2,500 and 3,000 ETH students attend one-semester courses offered within this programme. In addition, D-GESS offers a Bachelor’s degree in political sciences for regular officers of the Swiss army, two Master’s programmes, as well as specialised Master of Advanced Studies (MAS) courses. D-Gess is also responsible for high-school teacher training within the framework of the Lehrdiplom für höhere Maturitätsschulen [Teaching diploma for upper secondary schools].
The academic success of the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences is apparent, on the one hand, in the 500 or so publications it produces every year and, on the other, in the level of third-party funding which, at 44% of total D-GESS expenditure, is one of the highest of all Departments of the ETH.
