Humanities, social and political sciences are crucial to the profitable and sustainable exploitation of scientific and technical developments, discoveries and innovations for society. The research work carried out by departmental chairs of D-GESS represents a major contribution to fulfilling the mission statement of the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zürich): to leverage the innovation potential of (scientific and technical) research for the long-term benefit of society and the economy. The outstanding research carried out by the departmental chairs enjoys international recognition.

The departmental chairs of D-GESS are divided into three areas:

Behavior

Governance

Knowledge

This enables academics to form dynamic research teams whose efficient and successful work is performance-driven. Research projects are financed by the ETH Zürich, contributions from the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and the ETH's own research funds, while 43 percent of funding is accounted for by third-party funds. D-GESS thus has the highest level of third-party funding of all the departments of the ETH Zürich. Research results appear in around 300 publications each year.
