Didactic Training

Main content

The professorship for Learning and Training Research at D-GESS is also responsible for didactic training at ETH Zurich, where it cooperates closely with professorships from the other disciplines. This training is offered in two variants: as a Teacher’s Diploma for secondary schools and as a Teaching Certificate. An MA in Didactics is also offered.

Teacher’s Diploma for secondary schools

The Teacher’s Diploma can be taken in the subjects of biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, physics, and sports. It is a certificate of pedagogical-didactic training with a view to teaching at secondary schools, specialist secondary schools, universities of applied sciences, and other higher educational establishments. This degree can be taken in parallel to a Bachelor’s or Master’s study course, during a doctorate, or as an extra-occupational course. It is offered in German. A Teacher’s Diploma can only be awarded if the candidate has completed the respective Master’s degree (or diploma) at a university, and in some cases is contingent upon additional professional requirements. The effort required is approximately equivalent to one year’s full-time studies and can be extended for up to six years at most.

Teaching Certificate

The Teaching Certificate is offered in the fields of agricultural and food science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, and environmental sciences. The Teacher’s Diploma is suitable for those seeking basic training as teachers in further education within businesses and institutions. It does not, however, meet the EDK requirements for teaching at secondary schools.

This degree can be taken in parallel to a Bachelor’s or Master’s study course, during a doctorate, or as an extra-occupational course. It is offered in German. A Teaching Certificate can only be awarded if the candidate has completed the respective Master’s degree (or diploma) at a university, and in some cases is contingent upon additional professional requirements. The effort required is approximately equivalent to half a year’s full-time studies and can be extended for up to four years at most.

MA Science Didactics

The Master of Arts “Fachdidaktik der Naturwissenschaften” (Science Didactics) is a Joint Master offered by the Zurich University of Teacher Education, ETH Zurich, and the University of Zurich. It qualifies graduates for research, teaching, and further education at universities of teacher education and specialized didactic research and teaching at universities and universities of applied sciences.

Didactic knowledge and skills gained in this degree course can be introduced as part of a doctorate. Further professional employment options include work in institutions of learning, educational planning, or consultancy services in a scholastic environment.
