BA in Public Policy

In accordance with the requirements of modern armed forces this bachelor programme meets the prerequisites for Swiss career officers of both sexes. A sound knowledge base in Public Policy as well as in Military Sciences forms the background for the prospective professionals. Organised in partnership with the Military Academy (MILAC) at ETH Zurich it is widely recognized as an important educational contribution of both institutions, ETH Zurich and Switzerland’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) to military leadership.

 

Programme and Regulations

The programme of the Bachelor Public Policy at ETH Zürich aligns with the interdisciplinary concept of those knowledge disciplines which address the nature and organisation of states. It consists of various courses in law, business administration, economics, politics, conflict research and security policy, history, sociology and psychology. Topical problems are being analysed with the methods of the social sciences as well as those of the historical sciences.

Special attention – because focussed on the subsequent career – is being given to the military sciences, which are offered additionally. The disciplines provided there are military history, strategic studies, economics of defence, leadership and communication, military sociology as well as military psychology and military pedagogy. Practical modules deepen their scope.

Another emphasis are specific language courses, which encompass English and a second language of the country.

Exams, exercises and additional courses are taking place between semesters.

Those students who started their studies between autumn 2011 and 2017 follow the requirements of the study regulations 2011. As of autumn 2018, the so called study regulations 2018 are binding.

This bachelor programme is reserved for prospected career officers of the Swiss Army only. It forms part of the ‘Bachelorlehrgang’ (BLG) run for the Swiss Armed Forces by the Military Academy (MILAC) at ETH Zurich. The course language is German.
